At Dunnwell Plumbing & Heating our engineers also carry out Water Audits. It's an unfortunate fact that many hot & cold water systems are wasteful and are not up to current regulations.
The can be for many reasons including poor system design, poorly installed, poorly maintained, etc.... Again it's an unfortunate fact this is because of plumbers who are not correctly trained or who only hold basic plumbing qualifications and who do not fully understand the implications of system design.
Systems fitted by plumbers who only hold basic qualifications or even who are unqualified are often designed for "what works" but not for what is correct. There are a number of regulations that impact on the design of hot & cold waters systems and waste water. The main regulations are the Building Regulations G, H & L and the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999.
There are also a number of other regulations & recommendations to consider in designing and maintaining plumbing systems. These include the Approved Code of Practice for the control of Legionella bacteria (ACOP L8) and the Thermostatic Mixing Valve Association Recommended Code of Practice for Safe Water Temperatures.
Breaking the regulations can lead to prosecution.
As a Water Industry Approved Plumber we are classed as an "Approved Contractor" under regulation 1 of The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. Under the legislation, owners and occupiers of premises which have public water supply connections and anyone who installs or alters such plumbing systems have a legal duty to comply with the regulations and they can face prosecution for a criminal offence if they fail to do so. So as we hold "Approved Contractor" status you can ensure you are meeting your legal obligations.
We are one of only a few Water Industry Approved Plumbers in West Yorkshire. You can find out more about the Water Industry Approved Plumber Scheme at www.wras.co.uk.
Schedule 2 Paragraphs 8 to 13 of The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 deals with the design, installation and commissioning of hot & cold water systems. As City & Guilds and NVQ level 2 & 3 qualified plumbers we hold the qualifications to ensure that this work is done correctly. And as Water Industry Approved Plumbers we can carry out work that many plumbers need to have pre-approved by the local Water Authority.
During a water audit one of our service our engineers will visit your property and carry out a survey on your hot & cold water systems and drainage. The survey will look at the performance of your system with minor adjustments made whilst on site.
Our water audits help our customers meet there legal obligations under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 and has saved our customers money in reduced heating and water bills and in many cases increased performance.
The cost of a water audit starts from £60.00.
During our water audits we have resolved many issues for our customers which other plumbers and even manufacturers have been unable to resolve. Some of the issues we have resolved have been;
Hot Water That's Too Hot - One of our customers contacted us because they were concerned by the high temperature of their hot water mainly because they had young children. After calling out a Gas Safe Registered plumber, speaking to the boilers manufacturer and even have one of the manufacturers own engineers called out to inspect the boiler they were told the temperature was factory set and could not be altered. The water and building regulations do not allow for water heaters that do not have some type of temperature control. The boiler was fitted with an "economy button" which reduced the hot water temperature by over 20c. Previously our customer had to use large amounts of cold water to cool the hot water they had just heated. The saving in energy bills was immediate. We also made minor adjustments to the central heating system reducing bills further and gave advice on the use of thermostatic mixing valves.
Showers That Run Cold Even When There is Hot Water - One of our customers contacted us after continuing problems with showers that ran cold as you turned up the temperature even though there was ample hot water. Previous plumbing companies they had used had not been able to rectify the problem and had charged the customer for replacing showers that were in good working order. During our water audit we found the issue was with water pressure and not with the showers themselves. A simple valve was fitted to resolve the pressure issue which resolved the problems with the showers and even increased their performance.
Melted Shower Casing - One of our customers contacted us after she noticed the front cover of her electric shower had been melted from the inside out. Whilst we are not electricians we are qualified to carry out minor work on electrics related to plumbing systems including electric showers. The shower had been supplied and fitted by a manufacturers recommended installer. An inspection of the shower and the electrical system showed that the electrical supply was not suitable for the shower that was fitted resulting in an electrical short which could have proved fatal for our customer. We were able to supply and fit a suitable shower with suitable power requirements that previous plumbers claimed were no longer available.
