Yorkshire PAT Testing Services carry out Portable Appliance Testing in Wakefield, Leeds, Dewsbury, Castleford, Pontefract or anywhere in West, South & North Yorkshire. Our PAT testing engineers are PASS & Seaward Certified to carry out Portable Appliance Testing and are members of the Guild of PAT Testers.
Why Carry Out Portable Appliance Testing? - Portable appliance testing is an important part of any health & safety policy. The Health & Safety Executive states that 25% of all reportable electrical accidents involve portable appliances.
Who Should Have PAT Testing Carried Out? - The Electricity at Work Regulations place a legal responsibility on employers, employees and self-employed persons to comply with the provisions of the regulations and take reasonably practicable steps to ensure that no danger results from the use of such equipment. This in effect requires the implementation of a systematic and regular program of maintenance, inspection and testing. This is widely agreed to meet the requirements of the Electricity at Work Act 1989.
The Health & Safety at Work Act (1974) places such an obligation in the following circumstances:
• Where appliances are used by employees.
• Where the public may use appliances in establishments such as hospitals, schools, hotels, shops etc.
• Where appliances are supplied or hired.
• Where appliances are repaired or serviced.
Is PAT Testing a Legal Requirement? - Portable Appliance Testing is not a legal requirement but electrical safety is as stated in the Electricity at Work Act 1989 and PAT testing helps you meet those requirements. The Electricity at Work Act 1989 and the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 do not make any exception for the size, nature or location of a business. Small businesses, home workers and the self-employed maybe a low risk but are not exempt from the requirement to ensure electrical safety.
What Is The Current Guidance For PAT Testing? - The new guidance has been in place now for some time but many PAT testing companies still are not aware of it. Does your current PAT tester put a retest date on the sticker? Do they automatically recommend an annual retest? If so they are not following the new guidance and could be leaving you liable.
Our Portable Appliance Testing Services
At Yorkshire PAT Testing we carry out testing in line with HSE guidance and the new guidelines in the 4th Edition of the IET Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment. The level of inspection and testing required is dependent upon the risk of the appliance becoming faulty, which is dependent upon the type of appliance, the nature of its use and the environment in which it is used.
This is being commonly referred to as a risk based approach to Portable Appliance Testing. This now means that rather than having everything tested annually there can be as little as 3 months to as long as 4 years between testing depending on the risk. For example, a computer monitor in an office may be tested every 3 to 4 years where as a vacuum cleaner may be every 3, 6 or 12 months. This has allowed many customers to reduce their costs by not paying for unnecessary testing.
Using our custom built software and the latest in PAT testing equipment one of our multi skilled engineers will call to your property and carry out PAT testing in line with current regulations. Once testing is complete we will issue you with a "Test Report" which acts as your test certificate. This report includes an asset register of all appliances tested and the suggested retest date.
Our service doesn't stop there. To help our customers continue to meet their electrical safety obligations we will contact you between 30 and 45 days before your next round of PAT testing is due. We will provide you with a quote and list of items due to be tested. All you need to do is book when you want us to come. It is that simple.
We also have a female PAT testing engineer available for situations where our male engineers may cause an issue i.e. female only hostels and female only gyms.

Our Training & Accreditations
The Electricity at Work regulations states that: "No person shall be engaged in any work activity where technical knowledge or experience is necessary to prevent danger, or where appropriate, injury, unless he possesses such knowledge or experience, or is under such degree of supervision as may be appropriate having regard to the nature of the work". The IET Code of Practice states, those carrying out the inspection and testing must be competent to undertake the inspection and, where appropriate, testing of electrical equipment and appliances having due regard of their own safety and that of others.
We have undertaken NAPIT (National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers) endorsed training so you can be assured you are using a competent Portable Appliance Testing company.
